Create a new document size 1900×1200 and fill the background with black. Then take 3 of those scratch textures that Julia Star has created, and apply these effect to them. Leave the first texture set’s Layer Style to Normal, then set the other two to Multiply. This will darken the background and apply some nice color gradients.

Open New Document. I use 530 x 438 pixels on this tutorial. Use color #000000 for the background. Move the Image to the Working document using Move Tool (V). Name the image to “Stock Image”.

Create a New Layer above the Stock Image Layer. Choose Gradient Tool (G). Set the color to #9d5c5b and #b53564. Apply gradient to the new layer then set the layer to “Color” and 75% Opacity.

We start off by searching for a mobile phone image. Be sure it also has a flat background color. This can be found on stock sites like Stock.xchng.

Once you’ve found a mobile phone image you like that has a big enough resolution, go to Photoshop and open a new document (Ctrl+N). Then choose a color for the background layer. I chose a light blue/grey (#cad6dd). Select the Ellipse Tool (U), and make an oval form with it. Then transform it over whole of the image.

First off I opened the original image resulted from the shooting with the main purpose being isolating the character and the shadows on the floor. First thing I noticed was that his face was not expressive enough for what I had in mind.

Before we begin cutting out the character I needed to replace his head with one from another picture where he looked more optimistic. I always shoot a lot of pictures every session, so when situations like this arise I have plenty of other images to choose from.
